SEO From the Beginning

To truly understand just how much SEO has evolved, it is important to recap that evolution from the beginning.   • The 90s (1991-2002) – Back on August 6, 1991, the first website was created by Tim Berners-Lee. Quickly, individuals began to mimic what Mr. Berners-Lee created to start their own websites. As the Internet became more popular and crowded, finding a way to search through websites became a priority. The search engine, Excite, came out in 1993, followed by the powerful search engines, Yahoo (1994) and Google (1997). These search engines used keywords used within website content to provide users results when searching. At this time, SEO was not regulated, so marketing teams would over utilize keywords to help gain high ranking on these search engines. Once Google and others caught on to the SEO abuse, the rules and regulations that we have in place today around SEO began to form.
  • The Early 2000s (2003-2005) – During this time, companies taking advantage of SEO started to be penalized for their unfair tactics. Additionally, the search engines began to offer new personalization features including helping users find important information in reference to their location. This created an entirely new facet to the responsibilities of Einstein SEO because now customization was an option.
  • The Later 2000s (2006-2009) – The Internet continued to expand and grow in the late 2000s, offering users more real time search information and data. The use of historical data became a popular way for Google and others to display suggested search options. With SEO becoming much more targeted, Einstein SEO had to make sure that they continued to evolve from a business standpoint to help our customers remain the popular choice by search engines.

The Evolution of SEO has come so far over the last few decades that it cannot be explained in just one sitting.
